What Low-Temperature Extraction Actually Changes

Almost every conversation about skincare is about which ingredients are in the bottle. Very few are about how those ingredients were taken out of the plant in the first place. That step decides more than the label suggests.
What extraction actually is
A plant is not an ingredient. It is a structure of cell walls, fibre, water and everything held inside. To get anything useful into a bottle, you have to break that structure open and separate what you want from what you do not.
The oldest and cheapest way to do this is heat. Warm the plant material in water and the cell walls give way. Compounds move out into the liquid, you filter off the solids, and what remains is an extract. It is fast, it is reliable, and it is what most botanical extracts in most products are.
It also has a cost, and the cost is not obvious from the ingredient list. Two extracts made from the same plant, listed identically on a label, can behave very differently depending on how much heat was involved in making them.
Two extracts can carry the same name on a label and behave nothing alike. The label records what went in, not what survived.
What heat takes with it
Plants are full of compounds that are not built to survive being boiled. Some vitamins degrade. Some polysaccharides, the long sugar chains that give cactus and aloe their characteristic slip, break into shorter fragments that no longer hold water the same way. Volatile compounds simply leave.
None of this makes a hot extract useless. It makes it different. You end up with a liquid that still contains a great deal of the plant, but in a rearranged form, with some of the more fragile parts diminished or gone.
Korean cactus is an unusually inconvenient plant to treat this way. What makes it interesting is largely the mucilage, the thick, water-binding gel inside the pad. Mucilage is exactly the kind of structure that heat rearranges. Extract it hot and you have taken out the part you wanted and partly undone it on the way.
CN-27, and why it takes longer
CN-27 is our patented low-temperature extraction process. The principle is straightforward even if the engineering is not: open the plant without cooking it, and use the whole pad rather than pressing out only the juice.
Working at low temperature is slower. Cell walls that would surrender in minutes to boiling water take far longer to yield. Yields per batch are lower, equipment time per litre is higher, and the process cannot be rushed by turning something up. Every one of those facts costs money.
What you get for the trouble is an extract whose structure is closer to what was in the field. And structure, it turns out, changes how the finished product behaves on skin in a way you can measure.
Whole plant, not just the juice
There is a second decision hiding inside the word extract, and it is at least as consequential as temperature. How much of the plant do you actually use?
The efficient answer is to press the pads, keep the liquid, and discard the rest. Juice is easy to filter, easy to standardise and easy to put in a formula. The pulp goes to compost. Most plant extracts on most shelves are made roughly this way, and there is nothing dishonest about it.
The problem with cactus specifically is where the interesting material lives. Mucilage is not free-floating liquid waiting to be poured out. It is held within the tissue of the pad, bound up in structure. Press the pad and you get some of it. You also leave a great deal behind in the fibre you just threw away, along with the compounds concentrated in and just beneath the skin of the pad.
Whole-plant extraction means processing the entire pad rather than only what runs out of it. It is a more difficult starting material. There is more fibre to handle, filtration takes longer, and the resulting extract needs more work before it behaves consistently batch to batch.
Combine that with low temperature and you have compounded the difficulty deliberately. A slow process applied to the least convenient version of the raw material. On a spreadsheet it looks like a series of bad decisions.
The justification is simple enough. We are not trying to produce cactus extract at the lowest cost per litre. We are trying to get as much of one specific plant into a bottle as we can, in the condition it was in when it came off the field. Every shortcut available at this stage trades away some of that, and once it is gone no amount of formulating downstream puts it back.
Surface tension, explained without the physics degree
Put a drop of water on a waxed car bonnet and it beads. Put a drop of soapy water in the same place and it collapses into a flat film. Same surface, same volume, entirely different behaviour. The difference is surface tension.
Surface tension is the force pulling a liquid's surface inward, holding it into the smallest shape it can manage. High surface tension means a liquid would rather hold itself together than spread out. Low surface tension means it spreads.
Skin is closer to that waxed bonnet than most people expect. Its outer layer is lipid-rich and water-repellent by design, because keeping water out and in is most of its job. A liquid with high surface tension sitting on that surface stays where you put it in small beads. A liquid with low surface tension spreads thin and makes even contact.

The comparison worth sitting with is the first two rows. Same plant, same farm, different process, and the number nearly halves. That gap is the argument for low-temperature extraction stated in a single figure.

Contact angle is the practical version of the same measurement. Place a drop on a surface, photograph it from the side, and measure the angle where the liquid meets the surface. A tall, beaded drop gives a high angle. A flat, spread drop gives a low one.

In use, this is the difference between a product you have to work across your face and one that seems to find its own way there. It is why our textures feel lighter than their ingredient lists suggest, and why a small amount covers more than you expect.
What these numbers do not mean
We would rather tell you the limits than let you infer something we have not shown.
It is about spreading, not depth
Low surface tension means a liquid makes even contact with the surface of skin. It does not mean it travels deeper into the body, and we do not claim that it does. Cosmetics work on the surface. That is what they are for.
A good extract is not a whole formula
Extraction decides the quality of one input. Everything else, the balance of the formula, the preservative system, how it feels after twenty minutes, is separate work.

Why we do it the slow way
There is a straightforward commercial argument against low-temperature extraction. It is slower, it yields less, and almost nobody reads the part of the label where the difference would show up.
We do it because we grow the plant. When you have spent years on the same field, watched a crop through a winter that drops to minus thirty, and harvested it by hand, boiling it is a strange way to finish the job. The whole argument for growing your own is that you control what happens to it. Handing it to the fastest available process at the last step gives that away.
So the number in the table is not really a marketing figure. It is the measurable consequence of a decision made on a farm on the Goheung coast, several steps before anything reached a bottle.
